Is It Really In Reverse? [Updated]

Video Tease

Me and my cousin Josiah are working on a video that is shot completely in reverse. It all started with the Mute Math Video for Typical, I was just so amazed at the cool things you could do in reverse and thought it would be fun to try.

It’s tough to get stuff to look right in reverse. For instance, when reading a book, you must open and close it in a very awkward way, then you need to read from right to left, and bottom to top. Probably the most important thing we’ve come across though is walking. It takes a lot of work to walk backwards in a way that looks natural reversed, especially without looking. The end result, however, is worth it. When you see someone walking forward, there’s something in your brain that makes you think the clip is being played forward, until they fly away, or jump unbelievably high. It’s fun to see the reactions people have to the clips.

A little disclaimer, the video is not a professional quality at all. I’m shooting it with my Lumix FX3 digital camera (notice the lack of the word video). While I’m extremely impressed with the video quality this thing can put out, I won’t be making the worlds next theatrical masterpiece.

When we are finished with the final product I’ll be sure to post it up here. Until then, anyone have any ideas that work well in reverse?

[Update:]
I’ve now uploaded a short clip. Check it out!

  1. [...] A few weeks ago I wrote about a video my cousin and I were working on that was shot completely in reverse. Well we’ve finally finished it. Honestly the end result is a bit disappointing, mainly because we didn’t have enough time to run through the storyline and make it easier to understand. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the video is cool, but this just makes me want to make a better one. [...]
