Playing With Creative Blocks

Creative BlocksThis week at work I ran into one of the most aggrevating things in the creative world – a block. It didn’t really matter what I was trying to do (although it was one specific thing I couldn’t get around) because I just quit being creative, I couldn’t think of anything.
After a while I couldn’t stand it anymore and started to check out google for ways to get around these blocks. There were a few things that I tried, but nothing really worked for me.
Now comes the point of the entry: What do you do when you have trouble being creative? If so, share your advice.

Beepcon and the Frugalpole

My friend frugalpole and his friend bwack recently had a conference in Waco, TX on running loops in music. I didn’t go for a number of reasons, but it sounds like it was a great time, and a good amount of people came to have some fun. I believe they are planning on doing it again next year around this time. Check out beepcon.com to read more.
I loved the few years that I have been privileged to play with him and learn to drum with loops being more in the forefront. He has really gotten me into the idea that music doesn’t always have to be the same. If you want you can check out some of his stuff at his myspace.

Cars VS Computers

Does anyone remember this? It’s been a while since I last heard this true story:

At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: “If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.”

In response to Bill’s comments, General Motors issued a press release (by Mr. Welch himself) stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

  • For no reason at all, your car would crash twice a day.
  • Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.
  • Occasionally, executing a manoeuver such as a left-turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, and you would have to reinstall the engine.
  • When your car died on the freeway for no reason, you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
  • Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought ‘Car95′ or ‘CarNT’, and then added more seats.
  • Apple would make a car powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five per cent of the roads.
  • Oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single ‘general car default’ warning light.
  • New seats would force every-one to have the same size butt.
  • The airbag would say ‘Are you sure?’ before going off.
  • Occasionally, for no reason, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed the radio antenna.
  • GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of road maps from Rand-McNally (a subsidiary of GM), even though they neither need them nor want them. Trying to delete this option would immediately cause the car’s performance to diminish by 50 per cent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
  • Every time GM introduced a new model, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
  • You would press the ‘start’ button to shut off the engine.

OSX on a PC

Since Boot Camp came out there has been a lot of speculation about Apple’s future, well you can put most of that stuff to rest.
Mac Geekery has a great article on why they will never make OSX for pc’s, or even worse put windows as the default OS on Macs. If you are interested head over and read it.

Blog, Journal, News Entry?

Somehow I got to thinking about what we call our online writings, and I noticed that for a lot of people, the name doesn’t fit the content. For example, you are reading my “Journal,” but is that really what it is? Most of the stuff I write about is current events and technology, not about what’s going on in my life. Sure I write about that sometimes, but for the most part I don’t.
So what should our online writings be called? I thought about that for a while, and haven’t come up with anything good yet. What do you think? It has to be one word and needs to summarize what the writing is about.
Please note that “blog” stands for “web log”, and doesn’t fit the bill.
